Washington State

This place is extra special to our family. It was home for my husband for many years. Therefore, it was essential that both I, and the children enjoy Washington just as much. I didn’t quite know what my expectations were going into it, other than it must be rainy. My expectations were surpassed by the endless beauty of the State. There are a variety of landscapes to experience in this amazing place, no matter the season. We traveled here during the summer (but don’t worry, there will be upcoming Winter information soon).

We began the trip in Seattle. Direct flight from RDU (via Delta). The kids were shocked that they each got their own TVs on the airplane. Of course every trip has those unexpected adventures. My daughter lost her tooth in mid-flight. The tooth fairy does in fact travel as well. Much to our surprise, the Seattle tooth fairy pays out way more than the North Carolina tooth fairy.

While in Seattle, we did have to play tourist for the day! Our highlights included:

  1. The Seattle Ferris Wheel
  2. The Seattle Sounders
  3. Pike Place – Original Starbucks
  4. Wings over Washington

We stayed overnight at Embassy Suites in Pioneer Square. So grateful for this choice, as we were able to walk right next door to Lumen Field with such ease!

Next, we traveled to Jetty Island, boarded a ferry and hung on the beach and paddle boarded around. This is one of my husband’s hubs for kiteboarding.

Next stop, Granite Falls. If you’re ever traveling around this area, consider staying at our River Cabin. Enjoy the relaxing river from the cozy cabin!

During our time around Granite Falls, we traveled to Woodinville one afternoon to spend time at Chateau Saint Michelle in a private cabana. We were spoiled with delicious wine, amazing food, music, peacocks, yard games and unforgettable scenery.

Woodland Park Zoo is another great place to check out. Tip: if you have a NC Zoo membership, you can get 50% off admission prices. Our last highlight from our trip, was doing a hike to the Big Four Ice Caves. What an adventure! We were able to see so many different types of terrain in this half-day hike. During the summer time, this surely is an enchanting experience. The hike begins with lush forest trails, fording a river, walking through wildflowers and ending at an ice cave! We were able to manage this trail with 3 children and a dog (a little carrying along the way). This trail is a there-and-back trail.

Our flight back to RDU was on Alaska Airlines; another great airline that flies direct between both hubs.
